What size pillows do you offer?

Are these good for back (or side or stomach) sleepers?

Yes! Because the height of these pillows can be adjusted, they are easily made to fit whatever kind of sleeper you are.

Can the "Back to Natural" (TM) shell be used as a cover or case over another pillow?

No. Whereas the zippers are wide enough to insert all different types of fill, they aren't wide enough to insert a pillow of the same size.

What is the uneven coloration you mention may be present on the "Back to Natural" (TM) Pillows Shells?

We get our fabric in its raw, greige state so the cotton has had no finishing or processing done to it other than weaving. This means that some natural cotton plant color is still present after being picked in the field and then ginned. When we wash the shells, some of that color comes out but, again, because we choose a gentler way of "finishing" by using plain water with a free-and-clear detergent followed by a lower heat drying, the fibers aren't being forced to release all of the color for the sake of uniformity. And why do that? The more processing done to the fibers, the weaker it makes them for longterm use. As well, the amount of extra resources used for making an even white cotton (as well as added chemical detergents, bleaches, sizings, starches, dyes, etc) is left out for the good of us all. And the difference is about the same as that between unbleached and bleached flour: noticeable only under certain light.

Is a knit pillowcase hot to sleep on?

Not at all. Our 100% cotton knit has excellent breathability which is what helps make it superb at staying cool. This is also why, when it's hot in the summer, we reach for a cotton t-shirt over a woven (even short sleeve) button down.

Is a pillowcase necessary or can I use the pillow without one?

These pillows work equally well without a pillowcase since they were designed to be regularly washed/dried as needed for optimum cleanliness. A pillowcase may increase the time needed between launderings but is completely optional.

When can I expect my order to ship?

All of our products are made-to-order and usually ship within 3 - 5 business days. Estimated carrier shipping times listed at checkout are in addition to that. If you need your order sooner, please make a note at checkout or email us and we will be glad to move you to the head of the queue.

NOTE: Due to our rural location, actual carrier expedited shipping is not available.

Do you ship internationally?

We do ship internationally to most countries with DHL.  We do not, however, know how much duties and taxes may be at the recipient's end.  That value is assessed in-country and not available to us

NOTE: As of September 2021, we will no longer be shipping to Canada due to continued issues issues at Customs.  Many of our shipments are being returned to us by Customs officials with no explanation given so until we can work out the issue, we aren't going to be able to fulfill any orders to our dear Canadian neighbors.

Is the pillow fill safe?

Yes! Our fill s made from a USA produced rPET(the "r" stands for recycled). PET has been approved as safe for contact with humans, foodstuffs and beverages by the FDA, Health Canada, the European Food Safety Authority and virtually every other health-safety agency in the world. It has been used for food and beverage containers for decades without any known adverse effects. Extensive studies of PET and PET packaging have repeatedly shown it to be safe.

What are the brown flecks in the natural color fabric?

In all processed cotton, tiny pieces of the cotton plant (leaf, stem and seed) can get spun into the thread.  Typically, bleaching and dying will make these disappear but in raw, organic cotton like we use, those flecks may still be visible.  But in all instances, they are completely natural and do not harm the fabric at all.

Does the pillow have a smell?

Since the fabric we use is 100% USDA Certified Organic Cotton. there are no nasty chemicals applied to it - or the fill. Having said that, the cotton is plant-based and some people may notice it has a natural sweet “earthy” smell early on. Most of this is due to the oil from the cotton seed which is present during ginning but it is completely non-toxic and will dissipate naturally over time.

Where are your pillows and materials really made?

Our Fabrics:

The fabric we use for our pillow covers and pillowcases starts in the cotton fields right here in the USA. The farmer that grows the cotton we use is from Texas and has been USDA Certified Organic since 1992.  The cotton then moves to the processing stage (ginning, spinning, knitting, finishing), which is also USA-regionally local to us.

Our Fill:

The BPA-free water bottles from which our stuffing is made are collected from recycling bins all over the USA before being cleaned, chipped, extruded and finally clustered into our 100% eco-friendly fill....just down the road in the Carolinas.

Bits and Bobs:

Our zippers and thread originate in the Peach State; our tags, again from Texas. We love knowing that our efforts to keep our transportation and carbon-footprint small are proving successful and we continue to shrink that radius with new, local sources for sustainable packaging.

Sewing & Shipping:

All of the above pillow and pillowcase components arrive here in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia where our business headquarters and sewing facility happily reside under one roof.  Our Team is made of local people who gather together to cut-out and sew and iron and fluff and package and discuss the goings-on in the world.  And if a little gossip creeps into the conversation from time to time, well, we are only human after all.

How do I wash and dry the pillow?

Using any detergent, machine wash on cold.  No need to wash on warm or hot.  Modern detergents work equally, if not better, on cold. Machine dry on a low or medium settiing.  For more efficient results, add a couple of dryer balls to loosen the fill and dry more quickly.

Once out of the dryer, reshape the pillow by grabbing two corners and vigorously thumping it; repeat with the opposite corners.  Roll or knead to finish the fluffing and reshaping.

How often should I wash and dry the pillow?

That really is up to you.. You can go as long as once a year or as little as once a month.  More often than that is probably unnecessary unless it is being used in a particularly high-use way, such as a preschool.

Can the pillows be air-dried after washing?

Air-drying is not recommended if you wash the entire pillow. It's too difficult for moisture deep inside the pillow to migrate to the outside in a timely manner. You may unstuffed your pillow and then wash and air-dry the shell only.

My pillow got wet/damp, I didn't catch it and now there are black spots on the cover?

This is most likely common mildew, which is easily treatable by soaking in a tub of water with a capful of bleach or a quarter cup of white vinegar for at least an hour and then washing and drying. The stain may not disappear completely but the active mildew will be killed and the pillow perfectly fine to keep using.

Why can't I find you on any social media sites?

Put simply, it's just not who we are. We did have it all a few years back but were feeling so fatigued we wondered if that could be why. So, we cut the cord and have felt blissfully better ever since!

In addition to the toll it was causing on our mental health, we learned of the toll it also takes on our planet.

According to Greenspector, in 2021 "there were 4.33bn social media users globally. Across the 10 social media platforms the company looked at, their combined use adds up to 262m tonnes CO2e. That’s 0.61% of global emissions, or almost the same as the carbon footprint of Malaysia."

As we already create carbon via our website and email platform, social media was something we could NOT do to create less.

For us personally and in terms of our business growth, it's simply been a win-win all around!

Is the pillow fill a microplastic?

It is right on the edge of being classified as a microplastic; but as it is being sequestered inside the pillow (until its recycled again into another form) is generally regarded unable normally to enter the environment.

At what age should I give my child a pillow for the first time?

Some pediatricians recommend starting your child on a pillow as early as 18 months, others not until 24 months.  If you intend to give your baby a pillow earlier than what your pediatrician recommends, we suggest putting the pillow UNDER the bottom-sheet. This way, your baby can benefit from the lift while minimizing any suffocation risk.

What is a Flap Style pillowcase?

Our cases are made with a flap (or pocket) on the inside which then pulls over and around the pillow ensuring the pillow and case stay securely bundled together. This provides the insertion ease of a regular/open-ended pillowcase along with the fully wrapped nature of an envelope style. The best of both worlds!

Do your pillows and cases contain flame retardants?

None of our materials are made with any flame retardants, anti-wrinkle coatings, or even sizing, starches or dyes.

Does your recycled fill contain BPA or any other endocrine disruptors?

The recycled PET water bottles from which our fill is made contain NO chemical phthalates or bisphenol A (BPA). PET plastic is approved as safe for food and beverage contact by FDA and similar regulatory agencies throughout the world, and has been for more than 30 years. PET plastic is used in a variety of packaging for many foods, including everything from peanut butter, soft drinks and juices to beer, wine and spirits.
